The Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone was found by one of Napoleon’s soldier as they were retreating from Egypt in a place called Rashid (“Rosetta”) in the Delta. The year was 1799. The Rosetta Stone according to scholars was a decree issued by then newly-crowned King Ptolemy V Epiphanes concerning endowments to certain temple. The Stone dates back to 196 BCE.
The Decree was written in three languages, the last inscription was in Greek and the first two were two different ways of writing the Egyptian Language; hieroglyphic and demotic.
It was the Frenchman Jean-Francois Champollion who first managed to decipher the Hieroglyphic script.
At present, The Rosetta Stone is on display at the prestigious British Museum in London and has been with England since 1802.
Egypt at present is claiming the Rosetta Stone.
